DESCRIPTION:Ealdorman Ordlaf is famous to many as the author of the Fonthi
ll Letter\, a confusing but fascinating record of cattle-rustling\, oath-t
aking\, and outlawry in the reigns of Alfred the Great and Edward the Elde
 r. He is also the beneficiary of Sawyer 368\, a charter of Edward the Eld
er in the archive of Wilton abbey dealing with land at Stanton St Bernard\
, Wilts. In this paper I will look at the estate history given in the bod
y of this charter and at its textual transmission to see how these give us
more information about Ealdorman Ordlaf\, and perhaps even cast lay liter
acy in a more sinister light...
