DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will do my best to re-present the keynote tal
k given by Prof Jack Dongarra to the MRSN workshop in Manchester a few wee
ks ago. Jack's abstract for the original talk is below\, and he has kindly
provided his slides.\n\nIn this talk we examine how high performance comp
uting has changed over the last 10-year and look toward the future in term
s of trends. These changes have had and will continue to have a major impa
ct on our software. Some of the software and algorithm challenges have al
ready been encountered\, such as management of communication and memory hi
 erarchies through a combination of compile--time and run--time techniques\
, but the increased scale of computation\, depth of memory hierarchies\, r
ange of latencies\, and increased run--time environment variability will m
ake these problems much harder. We will look at four areas of research t
hat will have an importance impact in the development of software.\n\nWe w
ill focus on following themes: \n.	Redesign of software to fit multicore a
rchitectures\n.	Automatically tuned application software \n.	Exploiting mi
xed precision for performance\n.	The importance of fault tolerance\n
