DESCRIPTION:Orbital degeneracy in the d states of transition-metal oxides
gives rise to various intriguing phenomena\, including large magnetic-fiel
d effect. Such magnetic-field effect is caused by the strong coupling betw
een orbital and spin degrees of freedom in transition metals\, which arise
s either from the so-called Kugel-Khomskii interaction (interionic orbital
-spin coupling) or from single-ion spin-orbit coupling. In my talk\, I sho
 w several intriguing properties\, for example\, magnetic-field-induced str
uctural phase transition\, “colossal” magnetostriction arising from th
e magnetic-field-induced alignment of crystalline domains\, and large magn
etocapacitance\, in spinel oxides (MnV2O4\, FeV2O4\, and Mn3O4)\, and disc
uss how these properties can be explained by such orbital-spin coupling.
