DESCRIPTION:Many recent studies have addressed the role of the entropy pro
duction rate (EPR) in characterizing nonequilibrium steady-state fluctuati
ons. In active matter systems the production of entropy occurs on the scal
e of each individual particle where persistent mechanical motion is genera
ted from a local extraction of energy and subsequent dissipation of heat.
In this talk I will present unpublished results on the EPR in these system
s\, with a particular emphasis on active matter with (metric and ferromagn
etic) alignment interactions\, in conjunction with a review of the availab
le literature. More specifically\, I will discuss both analytical as well
as numerical results we have obtained on the Toner-Tu field theory of the
transition to flocking\, as well as for some particle based models of alig
 ning active matter.
