DESCRIPTION:Renormalization group methods have been used for almost 50 yea
rs to obtain results for critical exponents of conformal field theories (C
FTs)\, while relying on assumptions and approximations that are not rigoro
usly justified. More recently\, the numerical conformal bootstrap\, a full
y nonperturbative method\, has proven to be very powerful in calculating c
ritical exponents and other physical observables of unitary CFTs. In this
talk we will review the numerical conformal bootstrap method and discuss i
ts applications to 3D CFTs relevant for continuous phase transitions obser
ved in various experiments.\n\n(Please note the unusual venue for this sem
 inar.)
