SUMMARY:A regime view of the North Atlantic Oscillation and Atlantic jetst
ream variability - Tim Woollings (University of Reading)

DESCRIPTION:Variations of the atmospheric jetstreams over the North Atlant
ic result\nin large variability of the climate of western Europe on timesc
ales of\nweeks to decades. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a parti
cularly\ndramatic example of such jetstream variations\, but it is not the
only\nexample. This talk will give a general overview of the NAO and Atla
ntic\njetstream variability\, and will then show evidence that there are a
few\npreferred states\, or regimes\, within the spectrum of flow variatio
ns.\nImplications for the predictability of European weather\, and for the
\natmospheric response to anthropogenic forcing\, will also be discussed.
