DESCRIPTION:Conversational interfaces are increasingly commonplace and dia
logue agents are used to perform a variety of functions previously perform
ed by humans. Recent work in dialogue systems has begun to explore how hum
an-like character traits and personas can be embedded within dialogue agen
ts in order to support more human-like and naturalistic human-machine inte
ractions. In this talk I will explore some of the ethical and societal imp
lications that arise when developing increasingly human-like agents. In pa
rticular\, I will consider some key challenges for the responsible design
of conversational systems\, such as handling abusive interactions and priv
 acy-protecting measures.
