DESCRIPTION:My talk is positioned in the interstices of art history and a
history of concepts\n(Begriffsgeschichte) not framed by national boundarie
 s. It investigates the migrant journeys\nof the concept of art to regions
beyond the West. The focus here is on South Asia\, a context\nmarked by st
rong iconophilic traditions and practices where the modernist concept of a
rt\nenters into relationships with local and regional understandings of vi
suality and the image.\nStudying processes of transculturation involves ex
amining both linguistic translations as well\nas tensions between normativ
e idioms and art practice. Such processes are not only syncretic\nbut prod
uce fresh fissures within delicately balanced structures of disjunctive\nc
ontemporaneity. Taking the example of the heated controversies surrounding
the work of\nthe modernist artist M.F. Husain\, the talk will draw attent
ion to art’s difficult location within\na domain that seeks to hold the
religious and aesthetic in a single frame\n
