DESCRIPTION:This talk will be an introduction to some parts of the Minimal
Model Program. Starting with any mildly singular n-dimensional variety X\
, the goal of the Minimal Model Program is to either show that X is a fibr
ation with positively curved fibers\, or to produce a minimal model Y whic
h is birational to X. That Y is minimal means it has a nef canonical class
\, in other words the restriction of a differential n-form to any curve in
Y has at least as many zeroes as it has poles. In lower dimensions this g
oal is always achievable\, while in higher dimensions there are still many
conjectures. I will try to demonstrate some central techniques and result
s\, and the talk will hopefully include many illustrative examples of the
interesting geometry happening in higher dimensions.
