DESCRIPTION:Measurements on individual molecules have revolutionized how c
hemists can perceive molecular properties and dynamics\, yet single-molecu
le techniques can only be applied with considerable experimental constrain
ts. The Goldsmith group develops new tools through chemical synthesis\, m
icro and nanophotonics\, and microfluidics that allow single-molecule tech
niques to be applied in previously inaccessible scenarios and enable new m
easurements. I will discuss recent measurements on the initiation of indi
vidual organometallic catalysts\, observation of single-molecule binding d
ynamics at millimolar concentrations\, detecting the heat dissipated from
molecules using optical microresonators\, hybrid photonic-plasmonic system
s\, and spectroscopy on individual conductive polymer molecules.
