DESCRIPTION:One of the more curious exact solutions of Einstein gravity is
the "C-metric"\, a metric representing an accelerating black hole\, the f
orce being provided by a cosmic string emerging from the black hole horizo
 n. The black hole is neither isolated\, nor static\, unless we embed it in
AdS and drop the acceleration below the AdS scale - a so called "slowly a
ccelerating black hole". I will describe how to derive thermodynamics for
the non-isolated black hole\, including the cosmic string tension as a the
rmodynamical variable -- as a result\, a new chemical potential is introdu
ced\, the thermodynamic length. I will also discuss a set of extensive var
iables\, or chemical expressions for the black hole that do not involve an
y reference to the geometrical parameters and describe some critical pheno
 mena for the black hole.
