DESCRIPTION:Torrents of new biological data are being generated daily\, bu
t our understanding of biological systems has not grown proportionally. Th
is disparity arises from the fact that the behaviour of a biological syste
m is not a linear combination of the behaviours of its components. Indeed\
 , higher-level structures within biological systems\, such as an organ\, c
an be maintained precisely because of the complex network of nonlinear int
eractions among the lower-level components\, e.g.\, the cells comprising t
he organ.\n\nThe good news is that the interconnectedness of these network
s is responsible for their remarkable efficiency and adaptability. The bad
news is that this interconnectedness poses extraordinary challenges to re
searchers. My groups is working toward the development cartographic method
s that will enable researchers to glean the important information on a giv
en biological system the scale of interest to the researcher. I will repo
rt on the progress we have made toward this goal.\n\nFor information about
Professor Amaral's research please visit his group's website:\n\nhttp://a
