DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will define an invariant which represents a qua
ntitative version of Vershik and Gordon's property of "local embeddability
into finite groups". This mirrors quantitative versions of residual finit
eness\, which have been much studied in the past decade. I will estimate t
his invariant in several examples\, including wreath products and other si
milar group extensions. I will also describe a family of groups which\, wh
ile residually finite\, are easier to approximate using finite local embed
 dings than finite quotients.\n
