DESCRIPTION:The inclusion of design courses in university engineering prog
rams has been increasing for some time\, prompted in part by the design re
quirements in the ABET accreditation standards. However\, the purpose\, fo
cus\, and implementation of these courses vary widely by individual\, inst
itution and discipline. This talk will look at some of the common goals an
d strategies in design education with a focus on mechanical engineering. T
he differences and difficulties in design education for civil engineering
will be discussed. Finally\, the philosophy behind KAIST's new mandatory f
reshman design class ED100: Introduction to Design and Communication and
some of its early results will be presented.
