DESCRIPTION:The Dead Sea Basin is an intracontinental basin located within
the Dead Sea Transform that separates the Arabian and Sinai plates. The D
ead Sea is a terminal lake\, and it is the lowest point on earth\, with wa
ter level currently at an elevation of approximately -414 m. It is tectoni
cally subsiding.\n\nThe unique geological environment of the area has led
to special geotechnical issues and some of these will be discussed in the
lecture:\n\n• It is seismically active.\n\n• Use of standard soil mech
anics definitions and testing approaches have been found to be inapplicabl
e for its highly saline evaporate deposits and it has been necessary to de
velop alternative concepts and testing procedures.\n\n• Over recent year
s\, sinkhole formation began and has been accelerating\, presenting a seri
ous danger for urban\, industrial and tourist activity in the region.\n\n
 • Creep rather than primary consolidation has been observed to be domina
nt with regards to settlement of structures.\n
