DESCRIPTION:We discuss a method proposed by L. Slepyan in 1981 which allow
s solving various problems related to wave and fracture propagation in dis
crete structures. It has already shown its effectiveness to tackle a wide
range of the problems and structures. One can mention: full/bridge crack p
 ropagation\, phase transition\; various lattice (rectangular\, triangular)
  and chain structures\; various links (springs / beams)\, etc. <br> Such p
roblems are eventually reduced to scalar Wiener-Hopf problems. This allows
to solve them and extract valuable information about the processes. We di
scuss both advantages and limitations of the method and highlight its impo
rtance for metamaterials. We conclude by revisiting a few "simplest" probl
ems demonstrating recent advances in the area.
