DESCRIPTION:We discuss a method proposed by L. Slepyan in 1981 which allow
s solving various problems related to wave and fracture propagation in dis
crete structures. It has already shown its effectiveness to tackle a wide
range of the problems and structures. One can mention: full/bridge crack p
 ropagation\, phase transition\; various lattice (rectangular\, triangular)
and chain structures\; various links (springs / beams)\, etc. Such probl
ems are eventually reduced to scalar Wiener-Hopf problems. This allows to
solve them and extract valuable information about the processes. We discus
s both advantages and limitations of the method and highlight its importan
ce for metamaterials. We conclude by revisiting a few "simplest" problems
demonstrating recent advances in the area.
