DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ben Reis will discuss recent developments in advanced mach
 ine learning approaches to some of the grandest challenges of human health
 \, including suicide prediction\, pandemic prediction\, bioterrorism detec
 tion and drug safety prediction. The focus of the talk will be on understa
 nding both the methodological challenges involved and the ramifications of
  generating actionable predictions in these critical areas. The talk will 
 conclude by formulating a set of central challenges and opportunities faci
 ng the field of Predictive Medicine.\n\n\nBio:\nDr. Ben Reis is the Direct
 or of the Predictive Medicine Group at Harvard\nMedical School. His resear
 ch focuses on understanding the fundamental patterns\nof human disease and
  on developing novel approaches for predicting disease. He\nhas created sy
 stems that allow doctors to predict dangerous clinical conditions\nyears i
 n advance\, including suicide and domestic abuse\, as well as predictive\n
 pharmacology systems that allow drug safety professionals to identify\nlif
 e-threatening adverse drug effects years in advance. Dr. Reis has advised\
 nthe US government on establishing national biodefense systems in the wake
  of\nthe 9/11 attacks\, the Hong Kong government on building health infras
 tructure in\nresponse to the SARS pandemic\, the Greek government on estab
 lishing biodefense\nsystems for the Athens Summer Olympics\, and the Chine
 se Government in advance\nof the Beijing Summer Olympics. He has been hono
 red at the White House for his\nwork on harnessing social networks to prom
 ote health\, and was named one of the\ntop health innovators in the world 
 by the US State Department and NASA.\n
