DESCRIPTION:Atoms in highly excited Rydberg states exhibit strong \ninter
actions over distance scales of a few microns. In our work we \nexploit t
he enhanced sensitivity of Rydberg states to control the \npropagation of
light through an atomic ensemble. For example\, if the \natoms are prepa
red in a superposition of ground and Rydberg states \n[1] the medium acqu
ires a giant electro-optic effect many orders of \nmagnitude larger than
other systems [2]. Our eventual goal is to \nexploit this giant non-linea
rity to control pulse propagation at the \nsingle photon level.\n\n[1] AK
