DESCRIPTION:The stable commutator length of an element g in a group G is a
  well studied invariant in geometric group theory.\nMany classes of negati
 vely curved groups have a gap in stable commutator length. This can be see
 n as an algebraic thick-thin decomposition.\n\nIn this talk I discuss new 
 gap results for graph of groups. By applying JSJ decomposition we deduce t
 hat 3-manifolds have a gap in stable commutator length.\n\nThis is joint w
 ork with Lvzhou Chen (University of Chicago).\n
