DESCRIPTION:On May 12th 2008\, a strong earthquake\, scaled at 7.9\, hit S
ichuan province in the southwest part of China causing over 60\,000 fatal
ities (another 18\,000 are still missing) and causing devastating damage t
o all aspects of civil engineering in the area. Not long after the earthqu
 ake\, Dr. Xianfeng Ma\, currently visiting the Schofield Centre\, CUED\, j
oined the EEFIT (Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team) of the I
nstitution of Structural Engineers to see the epicentral area of the earth
quake and to investigate the damage caused by the earthquake. With the su
pport of Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu\, the nine people team w
ere able to access some of the worst affected areas\, spending six days in
the field.\n\nThis seminar will show some of the results of this mission\
, focusing on the damage to lifeline and geotechnical engineering during t
 he earthquake. The damage to lifeline\, roads\, dams\, bridges\, tunnels\,
water systems and some power transmission structures will be highlighted\
, whilst landslide and slope failures\, retaining structure failures\, beh
aviour of embankments etc will be summarized. Features of the damage and
some mechanism\, assumed to be associated with the damage\, will be discus
 sed.\n
