DESCRIPTION:Irreducible holomorphic symplectic (or hyperkahler) manifolds 
 are\nhigher-dimensional analogues of K3 surfaces. Their second cohomology\
 n(or dually\, homology) carries a quadratic form (the\nBeauville-Bogomolov
  form) which is an analogue of the intersection\nform. Rational curves of 
 negative Beauville-Bogomolov square are\nimportant for understanding the g
 eometry of these manifolds\, in the\nsame way as\n(-2)-curves are for K3 s
 urfaces. I shall survey some of our joint results\nwith Misha Verbitsky on
  this subject.
