DESCRIPTION:Geometry occupies a uniquely illustrious place in the history
of science. Many critical and celebrated advances in physics and various f
ields of mathematics have been achieved by viewing problems through a geom
etric lens. Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the applicat
ion of differential geometry to problems arising in engineering. In partic
ular\, the exploitation of symmetries and geometric invariance has led to
great advances in fields such as optimisation\, signal processing\, statis
tical learning\, medical imaging\, and material science. In this talk\, I
will review several topics in the engineering and applied sciences from my
own research that have been shaped by geometric thinking. Examples includ
e consensus theory and monotonicity\, statistics and optimisation in nonli
near spaces\, as well as topographic mechanics and material design.\n\nThe
