DESCRIPTION:A simply connected\, smooth (2n)-manifold is said to be highly
connected if it has integral homology only in dimensions 0\,n\, and 2n.\n
I will survey the problem of classifying highly connected manifolds up to
diffeomorphism\, as well as calculating their mapping class groups.\nI wil
l describe work\, joint with Robert Burklund and Andrew Senger\, that comp
letes the classification in all but finitely many dimensions.\nCombining o
ur results with theorems of Kreck\, Galatius\, Randal-Williams\, and Krann
ich gives new mapping class group computations.
