DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will discuss symmetric orthogonal polynomials o
 n the real line. Such polynomials give rise to orthogonal systems which ha
 ve important applications in spectral methods\, with several important adv
 antages if their differentiation matrix is skew-symmetric and highly struc
 tured. Such orthogonal systems\, where the differentiation matrix is skew-
 symmetric\, tridiagonal and irreducible\, have recently been studied by Is
 erles and Webb. The symmetric orthogonal polynomials studied will include 
 generalisations of the classical Hermite weight and generalisations of the
  Freud weight.
