DESCRIPTION:When a less viscous fluid is injected into a more viscous flui
d in a
Hele-Shaw\, the interface between the fluids is unstable. This i
s the
Saffman-Taylor instability which can give rise to a striking patt
ern formation
at the interface. The usual model for this type of flow i
s a
two-dimensional moving boundary problem which is amenable to comple
x variable
methods\, especially in the special case in which surface te
nsion is ignored.
For non-standard geometries progress can be made via
numerical simulation\,
using a level set formulation for example. Some
recent experimental\,
analytical and numerical studies of non-standard
moving boundary problems in
Hele-Shaw flow will be discussed. This is j
oint work with Liam Morrow\,
Tim Moroney and Michael Dallaston.
