DESCRIPTION:High-Performance Computing usually refers to scientific comput
ing done at scale using supercomputers. Supercomputers touch all our lives
through weather forecasting\, cancer research\, financial modelling\, ind
ustrial design and more although few members of the public have heard of t
hem. In this talk Rosemary will give an introduction to the industry and r
elated technologies: Who owns the world's supercomputers? What they are us
ed for? What do the workloads look like? How does a supercomputer differ f
rom any other large distributed system\, datacenter or cloud? If you wante
d to build a supercomputer\, how would you go about it?\n\nAbout Rosemary:
\nDr Rosemary Francis is the founder and CEO of Ellexus\, the I/O profilin
g company. Rosemary obtained her PhD in Computer Architecture from the Cam
bridge University Computer Lab after studying computer science at Newnham
in 2002. After working in the chip design industry\, Rosemary founded Elle
xus to help manage the complex tool chains needed for semiconductor design
. Ellexus now works with high performance computing organisations around t
he world such as Qualcomm and Decode Genomics. Ellexus has solutions for m
onitoring application I/O\, detecting file-system dependencies and optimis
ing scientific workloads\, both on-prem and in the cloud.
