DESCRIPTION:A key question in biology is how differences in gene function
or regulation produce morphological variation during evolution. Cardamine
hirsuta - a plant related to the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana - is
a powerful new experimental system for investigating this question. Our re
search aims to determine the genetic basis of divergence in floral structu
re between A. thaliana and C. hirsuta\, which differ in stamen and petal n
umber. We are using a combination of mutagenesis and quantitative trait lo
cus analysis to uncover the genomic regions underlying both induced and na
tural variation in C. hirsuta floral structure. This work should provide a
n exciting opportunity to understand how gene regulatory networks are reco
nfigured during evolution to produce divergent morphologies.
