DESCRIPTION:Modern wireless communication systems such as 4G and 5G are hi
 ghly complex and mathematics is critical to the design and operation of su
 ch systems on many levels. Examples of relevant fields are coding and cryp
 tography\, modulation schemes and information theory\, radio propagation m
 odels\, antenna design\, and distributed control and optimization of compl
 ex systems. I will give an overview of research at BT on these topics\, an
 d details of two case studies: (1) radio channel measurement and modelling
 \, and (2) steerable antenna design using recent developments in convex op
 timization techniques.
