DESCRIPTION:Stellar variability strongly affects radial measurements and a
s a consequence limits the detectability and mass characterisation of low
mass planets with radial velocity techniques. After introducing this chall
enge\, I will present the stellar processes affecting radial velocity meas
urements at various temporal scales and the approach we have developed: we
have used our very good knowledge of solar activity to build a large amou
nt of realistic synthetic time series for other solar-type stars. I will s
how how this approach allowed us to understand better the limitations\, le
ading us to propose a new mitigating method and to estimate the performanc
e of Earth-like planet in the habitable zone detections.
