DESCRIPTION:{ABOUT THE SPEAKER}\nGeoffrey Payne is a housing and urban dev
elopment consultant with nearly five decades of experience covering all re
gions of the world. He has undertaken research\, consultancy and capacity
building assignments for international development agencies\, governments
and academic institutions\, published widely and contributed to numerous i
nternational conferences\n \n{ABSTRACT}\nThe way that a society manages la
nd and housing expresses a great deal about the values it holds. Individua
l property ownership has been promoted globally as the solution to poverty
for the last four decades. Despite evidence showing that it has forced up
prices\, concentrated wealth and power in fewer and fewer hands\, and con
tributed to the 2008 financial crisis\, it remains a cornerstone of econom
ic policy in many countries. \n\nThe lecture will discuss international ex
perience and options for ensuring that land and housing are managed more e
ffectively in the public interest \n\n\n
