DESCRIPTION:I will present some of our recent results on the optical spect
 ral\nproperties of Spitzer 24 micron-selected galaxies and their close\nen
vironment at z<1\, over 1.5 square degrees of the COSMOS field. I will foc
us my talk on the aspects of galaxy activity revealed by the optical spect
ra. I will show that LIRGs inhabit more passive environments than ULIRGs\,
and that this is not an effect of their stellar mass. I will discuss the
 possible causes of this effect.
