DESCRIPTION:I will describe recent progress towards the classification of 
 groups of parabolic characteristic p\, p a prime. I will also draw attenti
 on to where methods used in the classification might transfer easily to th
 e classification of saturated fusion systems. Much of the work I will desc
 ribe is joint with Gernot Stroth and Ulrich Meierfrankenfeld.
