DESCRIPTION:We develop the concept of character level for the complex\nirr
 educible characters of finite\, general or special\, linear and unitary\ng
 roups. We give characterizations of the level of a character in terms of\n
 its Lusztig label and in terms of its degree. We also characterize the lev
 el\nof the character in terms of certain dual pairs and prove explicit\nex
 ponential character bounds for the character values\, provided that the\nl
 evel is not too large. Some applications of these results will be\ndiscuss
 ed. This is joint work with R. Guralnick and M. Larsen.\n
