DESCRIPTION:In this work\, I will present a generalization of the availabl
e potential energy (APE) framework developed by Winters et al. (1995) to t
he case of a fully compressible fluid with a nonlinear equation of state (
eos)\, which relies on decomposing the gravitational potential energy (GPE
) and internal energy (IE) into two and three subcomponents respectively.
The new framework has several implications for our understanding of the en
ergetics of turbulent mixing\, most notably regarding the roles of the non
linearities of the eos and of the relaxation toward thermodynamic equilibr
ium. It also suggests new directions for improving current parameterizatio
ns of turbulent diapycnal mixing that will be discussed. \n\n
