 demic disciplines\, yet both have an intriguing history. This talk reveals
  how people thought about smelling in eighteenth-century England - what sm
 ells were\, what they did\, and how people sensed them - and uses this to 
 uncover some key transformations in eighteenth-century medicine and social
  life.
