DESCRIPTION:The Dead Sea Scrolls are the remains of some 1\,000 ancient ma
nuscripts that were found in various sites at the Judaean Desert\, mostly
between 1947-57\, with additional discoveries through recent years. Their
discovery allows a unique insight into the turbulent cultural matrix of an
cient Judaism\, which also forms the background for nascent Christianity.
Nonetheless\, their historical contextualization is still much of a myster
y\, and communicating their content to contemporary readership poses intel
lectual challenges of various sorts. This talk will offer a glimpse into s
ome of these challenges\, as they transpire from the work on two new comme
 ntaries
