DESCRIPTION:An evening in conversation with Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder\, theo
retical physicist and author of Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Ast
ray.\n\nThis is the third event in the Ethical Conundrums and the Social R
esponsibility of Scientists series. In this series we address topics conce
rning the health of scientific research\, ethical sticking points in scien
ce\, and how new technologies might impact society. In particular\, we ask
\, what is the social and ethical responsibility of scientists?\n\nIn this
event we will discuss:\n\n(i) the flaws in the justification of research
efforts\,\n\n(ii) the incentives and biases that drive the academic resear
ch environment\,\n\n(iii) how the pursue of scientific research has change
d in recent years and what adaptation these changes call for.\n\nWe will d
o this with the help of Dr. Hossenfelder\, who will introduce the topics o
f this event\, which she has considered at length in her book\, blog\, and
Youtube channel\, through the lens of her experience in the field of theo
retical physics. We will then be moving to an interview of Dr. Hossenflede
r\, in which we will consider the implications of her conclusions on scien
tific research in general\, and ask what could be done to fix some of the
issues that she identifies.\n\nHosting the event will be Dr. Hannah Tomczy
k\, PhD in Physics from the University of Tübingen\, and current PhD stud
ent in Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge.\n\nYou\, as a
member of the audience\, will be an integral component in the discussion
as we will have interactive audience participation through polls and quest
