DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to find a particle theory that behaves like a s
tring theory? In this talk I review attempts to do this in the past and pr
esent more recent activity that uses the world line description of particl
e physics. This formalism allows the definition of a class of world-line t
heories that have the same UV complete properties as string theory. It tur
ns out that these theories are related to a class of ghost-free infinite d
erivative theories inspired by string field theory. It is also possible to
find particle theories that reproduce the dominant behaviour of string sc
 attering amplitudes at high energies.
