DESCRIPTION:The stethoscope was invented over 200 years ago but its acoust
 ics are still not fully understood. In this talk I will outline a new appr
 oach to modelling the stethoscope\, based on understanding the coupling be
 tween the stethoscope and the chest. At the dawn of the age of automated d
 iagnosis\, this model allows us to interpret the signals we are recording 
 and improve the design of future stethoscopes.\n
