DESCRIPTION:In effectively conveying complex information we frequently rel
y on accurate expressions of quantity\, often involving number. However\,
such information can also be (intentionally or unintentionally) misleading
\, sometimes for reasons that are well-described by classic pragmatic theo
ry\, and sometimes for reasons that are more elusive. In this talk I discu
ss how subtleties of quantity expressions enter into subsequent decision-m
aking\, focusing particularly on the case of cognitive bias\, and consider
how we might hope to get a fuller picture of what numbers mean in context
and how we should use them.
