DESCRIPTION:A fundamental problem in the context of Einstein's equations o
f general relativity is to understand precisely the dynamical evolution of
small perturbations of stationary asymptotically flat spacetimes. It is e
xpected that there is a discrete set of characteristic complex frequencies
that play a dominant role at late time intervals and carry information ab
out the nature of the stationary spacetime\, much like the natural frequen
cies of a vibrating string. These frequencies are called resonances or qua
sinormal frequencies. I will discuss a new approach that characterizes res
onances as genuine eigenvalues of time evolution operators. This is joint
 work with Claude Warnick.
