DESCRIPTION:Quantum phase transitions in metals are often accompanied by n
on-Fermi\nliquid behavior and the appearence of novel phases in the vicini
ty of the\nquantum critical point. Among the interesting theoretical conce
pts is that\nof an orbital-selective Mott transition\, equivalently a brea
kdown of the\nKondo effect\, in two-band systems - such a transition is ac
companied by a\ncritical Fermi surface. I will briefly review experimental
indications for\nthe existence of such a transition in heavy-fermion meta
ls\, and discuss\navailable theories and global phase diagrams. Additional
 ly\, I will\nconsider the influence of electron-lattice coupling\, which c
an induce a\nquantum version of the Kondo volume collapse. Such a transiti
on may be\npresent in the iron pnictide CaFe2As2.
