DESCRIPTION:Modern wireless communication systems such as 4G and 5G are hi
 ghly\ncomplex and mathematics is critical to the design and operation of s
 uch\nsystems on many levels.  Examples of relevant fields are coding and\n
 cryptography\, modulation schemes and information theory\, radio propagati
 on models\, antenna design\, and distributed control and optimization of c
 omplex systems. I will give an overview of research at BT on these topics\
 , and details of two case studies: (1) radio channel measurement and model
 ling\, and (2) steerable antenna design using recent developments in conve
 x optimization techniques.
