DESCRIPTION:Records of far-travelled volcanic ash\, not visible to the nak
ed eye but detectable in sediment records\, have expanded in North America
over the past 12 years. Analyses of ash transported from volcanic source
regions over 1000s of km away\, including Kamchatka\, Alaska and central A
merica\, provide detailed data across the Holocene that can be utilised fo
r many purposes. This seminar will touch on what records have been produce
d\, some practical lessons learnt about undertaking this work in North Ame
rica\, and implications of the new datasets for other research topics\, in
cluding eruptive histories\, atmospheric circulation and independently ass
 essing modern chronostratigraphies.
