DESCRIPTION:Nanoscale science\, engineering and technology have the potent
ial to revolutionise modern medical and industrial practices. However\, t
he development and production of nanomaterials also presents unique legisl
ative challenges. At the nanoscale\, materials take on unconventional pro
perties\, interacting with each other in new and unexpected ways. Althoug
h this provides fantastic opportunities for innovative engineering\, the p
otential risk to human health of subcellular interactions with nanoparticl
es is not yet fully understood. The question now is whether we can mitiga
te public fears over the potential risks of nanotechnology without comprom
ising vital scientific research.\n\n\nThis interactive panel debate on min
imising the potential public health risks of nanomaterials brings together
speakers including:\n\n*Dr John Roberts\, Head of Chemicals and Nanotechn
ologies at the Department for Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
\;\n*Professor Geoff Hunt\, researcher into Nanotechnology and Society at
the University of Surrey\, and co-founder of the International Network for
  Nanotechnology\, Science & Health\;\n*Professor Antony Seaton\, former he
ad of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at Edinbur
gh University\;\n*Dr. Alexandra Porter\, researcher into the impact of syn
thetic nanoparticles on human health and the environment at Imperial Colle
ge London.\n\nJoin us at 19:30 for an evening of comprehensive and informe
d debate on this important issue.\n
