DESCRIPTION:We recall some classical facts about the mod-p dimension serie
 s of groups\, and discuss their implications for diameters of Cayley (di)g
 raphs of finite p-groups. As a particular case study\, we examine the stru
 cture of the dimension series of certain groups of rooted tree automorphis
 ms which generalize a famous group discovered by Gupta and Sidki. Based on
  joint work with Laurent Bartholdi.
