SUMMARY:Origins of genetics on the early Earth - Dr Samuel Roberts (Depart
ment of Chemistry\, University of Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:One of the key questions concerning the origin of life is ‘H
ow did the complex chemistry of genetics appear on the early Earth?’. In
deed answering this question presents one of the most fascinating challeng
es of modern organic chemistry as it relies ‘unconventional’ chemical
techniques. The field has undergone something of a renaissance in the last
decade and is the subject of several recent high profile publications in
Science and Nature. Dr Roberts will review a history and future of the fie
ld\, including the most recent publications on the origins of genetics and
work from his PhD in Prof. Matt Powner’s group at UCL.
