DESCRIPTION:https://harvard.zoom.us/j/742082644 \nThe stability of structu
res continues to be scientifically fascinating and technically important.
Shell\nbuckling emerged as one of the most challenging nonlinear problems
in mechanics sixty years ago when\nit was first intensively studied. The s
ubject has returned to life motivated not only by structural\napplications
but also by the current interest in materials with unusual nonlinear beha
vior and in\ndevelopments in the life sciences concerning soft materials.
Efforts are underway in China\, Europe and\nthe US to update existing desi
gn codes for shell buckling to take account the computational and\nexperim
ental advances which promise to enable less conservatively designed struct
ures. The challenge\nis that shell structures are susceptible to dramatic
load-carrying reductions due to relatively small\nimperfections in their g
eometry. Imperfections must be factored into buckling load estimations. Re
cent\nwork by the speaker and his collaborators on spherical shells subjec
t to external pressure will be used to\nillustrate some of the new develop
ments in shell stability. In particular\, the talk will address buckling m
ode\nlocalization\, realistic imperfections\, and energy barriers for stab
ility.\nProfessor Hutchinson has made many groundbreaking discoveries in s
olid mechanics and inspired\nresearchers worldwide.\nHost: Professor Zhiga
 ng Suo\, Harvard University\n
