DESCRIPTION:We still do not know what string theory is.  After emphasizing
  the continued need for toy models of non-perturbative string theory\, I w
 ill discuss old and new motivations for a string theory description of the
  critical behavior of the 3d Ising model.  Then I will try to modify the I
 sing model so that the associated string theory is under better theoretica
 l control\, and describe what happens (based on 2003.04349\, with Nabil Iq
 bal).
